Introduction

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. is a 2006 japanese anime series. The plot involves Japan being conquered by the "New Britannia Empire," which apparently ruled much of the world, including both of the Americas.

New Britannia Empire

[st. George cross, blue field, coat of arms]

The flag of the empire is shown quite a lot, and is a oddly subtractive interpretation of the Union Jack (missing the crosses of St. Patrick & Andrew, but still with a blue field), but *very* defaced with a huge full achievement of arms - not those of the UK, either.

One likely reason for the considerable dissimilarity of the symbols from real life might be the fact that the Empire is, in the series, portrayed - shall we say - just a tad unflatteringly: an oppressive, warmongering dictatorship, its ruling classes cruel and foppishly decadent and its soldiers brutal and quite extravagantly racist. While the air of negativity is not absolute - the series' protagonist is Britannian - it's strident enough that I'm mildly surprised there hasn't been a diplomatic incident of some kind.

Flag protocol is followed in the series early on, when the leader of Area 11 (the new name for Japan) died, the flags were flown at half-staff for the duration from his death announcement to the state funeral. As Eugene said, this flag is used everywhere in Area 11 and during the early introductions to the series.

Japanese Resistance Army

The only other flag used in the series is the Japanese flag (without markings); it was used in the first episodes for background information and used on the equipment of the Japanese Self Defence Force. Now, it is used by the resistance army in the series.
